It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Joselyn Guadalupe Garcia ’29, a bright and dedicated student at Cornell University, who was found deceased in her campus residence hall on Friday morning. The heartbreaking news was shared later that afternoon in an email from Dean of Students Marla Love and Peter Loewen, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The loss of such a promising young woman has left the campus community grieving and in shock.
Joselyn was enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences with plans to pursue biological sciences. Originally from Brooklyn, New York, she was a proud first-generation college student whose perseverance and determination inspired those around her. She embraced opportunities to grow and connect, taking part in programs such as the Pre-Collegiate Summer Scholars Program and First at Cornell: First Generation Student Pre-Orientation, which reflected her commitment to making the most of her time at Cornell and building a strong foundation for her future.
Before arriving at Cornell, Joselyn had already distinguished herself as a leader and role model in high school. She was recognized as an aspiring dentist, excelling academically while also taking on leadership roles in student government, athletics, and community service. Those who knew her remember her as compassionate, ambitious, and deeply dedicated to uplifting others. Her vibrant personality and unwavering drive left a lasting impression on teachers, classmates, and friends alike.
Cornell University has extended its deepest condolences to Joselyn’s loved ones, including her parents and her three younger siblings, who now face the unimaginable pain of losing their beloved daughter and sister. The entire Cornell community stands with them in their grief, offering support, comfort, and solidarity during this difficult time.
Joselyn’s passing coincides with the recent loss of Michael Lenetsky, Senior Department Manager for the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. These back-to-back tragedies have deeply shaken the university, prompting the need for collective healing and support.
To provide space for reflection and care, the university has scheduled a support meeting for the College of Arts and Sciences community on Monday, September 22, at 5 p.m. in G28 Lewis Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall. A broader gathering for the entire Cornell community will follow at 7 p.m. in 404 Willard Straight Hall, Browsing Library.
In their message, Dean Love and Dean Loewen urged students, faculty, and staff to look after themselves and one another: “As our community struggles with these losses, we encourage everyone to care for one another and seek support when you need it.” They expressed heartfelt sympathy to Joselyn’s family and friends, asking the Cornell community to hold them close in thought and prayer as they navigate this devastating loss.
